An enormous volcanic eruption shot a monstrous plume of ash and dust over 3 miles into the sky and plunged local towns into darkness as the sun was blotted out.
The Mount Sinabung volcano, on North Sumatra, erupted early on Monday, with thick layers of ash covering areas up to 12 miles from the crater.
Indonesia’s Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation Center advised people to stay at least three miles from the crater’s mouth and should be aware of the peril of lava.
The volcano had been dormant for over 400 years until an eruption in 2010 and since then several eruptions have occurred.
Due to the renewed activity of the volcano over the last decade, some 30,000 people have been forced to leave their homes around the mountain.
The latest eruption of Mount Sinabung on the island of Sumatra comes after more than a year of inactivity but was the second since Saturday.
Witnesses said the volcano erupted emitting a thunderous noise and turned the sky dark. One resident said ‘The sound was like thunder’ and the area around Mount Sinabung is very dark now.
