The European Union has been challenged by Germany’s foreign minister to set up its own payment system that would give Brussels independence from the US monopoly over the global payments infrastructure.

Germany’s foreign minister, Heiko Maas was reported to say that Europe should not allow the US to act over their heads and at their expense; and that the EU should strengthen European autonomy by creating payment channels that are independent of the United States.

Swift is the current global payment management system based in Belgium that allows financial institutions worldwide to send and receive information about transactions. Swift claims political neutrality, but it has reportedly bowed to US influence in the past blocking transactions to countries the U.S. has sanctioned.

Some in Europe are calling for a re-balancing of the relationship with the U.S. in which Europe would fill gaps in the world left by American withdrawal and forming a counterweight when the US crosses their red lines.

The German foreign minister also said “It is high time to re-evaluate our partnership … The Europeans must become a mainstay of the international order, a partner for all who are committed to this order.”

This is important because prophecies (Daniel 8 & Daniel 9) indicate that the coming world leader known as the Antichrist will come out of a European base and one of his methods of controlling his world order will be a system of financial payment (Revelation 13).
