A catastrophic nuclear event doesn’t require the unlikely scenario of all the world’s nuclear powers unleashing their firepower at once.
A study found that a “limited, regional nuclear war” using “small nuclear weapons” could cause a decades-long nuclear winter.
In the study scientists computed what would happen if India and Pakistan, two nuclear powers with a border and a history of conflict, each launched 50 nuclear weapons at cities in the other nation.
It’s worth noting that the bombs in the researchers’ scenario — as powerful as the Little Boy dropped on Hiroshima, enough to devastate a city — are far less powerful than many weapons that exist today.
The bombs would ignite firestorms in the cities they hit, and the flames would release even more energy than the bombs themselves, sending smoke into the stratosphere.
Earth’s ecosystems would be pummeled and threatened by gyrating temperatures and these sudden blows to the environment and food supply along with the potential “ensuing panic” could cause a “global nuclear famine,” according to the authors of the study.
Researchers at the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists recently moved their so-called Doomsday Clock 30 seconds ahead, to 2 minutes and 30 seconds away from an apocalyptic midnight.
At play in their decision was not just the threat we face from nuclear weapons, but the threat of unchecked climate change and other issues facing humanity.
