Faithful Electors Chose Trump – But Historical Footnotes

After a fraught election, where some called on electors to vote against their state results, electors have now met in the electoral college and voted.

The results show the electors faithfully casting ballots with Donald Trump surpassing the necessary 270 votes in the Electoral College, the next step in the official process to become President. The Electoral College results will be officially certified January 6 during a joint session of Congress. 

However, this was the first US presidential election since 1872 with more than one “faithless elector” with there being seven: that being five among Democrats and two for Republicans. Thus giving Clinton more faithless electors than Trump. 

Also, Clinton actually won the popular vote by about 3 million ballots nationwide — making Trump the worst-performing winner in the popular vote since 1876.
