In a rare display of atmospheric violence, two Category 5 storms simultaneously churned across the Pacific Ocean this week.

The Central Pacific Hurricane Center elevated Hurricane Walaka to a Category 5 storm with 160 mph winds, and just three hours later, the Joint Typhoon Warning Center also put Super Typhoon Kong-Rey at Category 5 strength.

Both of the great storms held on to Category 5 strength for 1 to 2 days and then both storms weakened slightly to top-end Category 4 storms with 155 mph winds.

Simultaneous Cat 5s are very rare, and this is the first time in the historical record that Cat 5s have existed simultaneously in the Northwest Pacific and Northeast Pacific.

Kong-rey and Walaka bring the 2018 tally of Category 5 storms to eight, along with Trami, Marcus, Maria, Lane, Jebi, and Mangkhut.

Hurricane Walaka was located about 140 miles south-southwest of Johnston Island, an uninhabited, unincorporated U.S. territory that’s also a National Wildlife Refuge. Typhoon Kong-rey is headed for Japan’s Ryukyu Islands, and is expected to pass about 150 miles southwest of Okinawa.

The Lord said “… And there shall be … distress of nations, with perplexity, the sea and the waves roaring ….”(Luke 21:25) – which is exactly what these strong storms cause.
