A gunman killed at least three people and wounded 12 others near a Christmas market in the French border city of Strasbourg on Tuesday evening.

Its reported security forces caught up with the terrorist having at least two gun battles with him but yet he escaped and is currently still at large.

There are reportedly 350 security agents searching for him while France is raising its security threat level and also strengthening its borders.

While all the details of the attack and on the terrorist is not immediately clear, its known that France had still been on high alert after a wave of attacks commissioned or inspired by Islamic State militants since early 2015.

The French Interior Minister Castaner said this gunman was known to security services, and the local prefecture said he was on an intelligence services watchlist.

Some 26,000 individuals suspected of posing a security risk to France are on the “Fiche S” watchlist, of whom about 10,000 are believed to have been radicalised, sometimes in fundamentalist Salafist Muslim mosques, online or abroad.

France has been grappling with how to respond to both homegrown jihadists and foreign militants following attacks in Paris, Nice, Marseille and beyond since 2015.

France has also been under siege for the past weeks with the domestic “yellow vest” protests and riots in Paris and across the country.

Those have continued as they turned into a populist protest movement against the government fueled by anger toward heavy taxation and inequitable financial policies.

It is yet to be seen if those will die down after concessions the government made this week to the protestors. And now active terror attacks from a terrorist or cell not yet apprehended adds to the country’s stress and turmoil.
