French President Macron deployed the French Army with armored carriers and with authority to shoot if needed into the streets of France to tackle the continuing and increasingly violent yellow vest protests.

The deployment of army troops alongside regular security forces was done after French cities following the last riots were ransacked and charred from arson fires.

It was the yellow vest demonstrators 19th consecutive weekend of protests against President Emmanuel Macron’s government as the military units were deployed to help police clamp down on trouble.

Named after the high-visibility vests French drivers have to keep in their cars and worn by protesters, the demonstrations began in November after public anger against fuel tax rises.

The movement has morphed into a broader backlash against Mr Macron’s government, despite it scrapping the fuel taxes, and it has often been marred by violent clashes and looting.

The government became more defensive after security forces were previously unable to prevent violence, arson and looting on the Champs Élysées and other prominent areas.

The government then removed the Paris police chief and announced the banning of anti-government street protests in some areas, and the deployment of the military for the yellow vest protests.

It’s reported a French General said concerning the military deployment that “the soldiers have different courses of action to tackle a range of threats, which include opening fire…”

He also said “… they are perfectly capable of appreciating the nature of the threat and of responding in a proportionate manner.”

His statements were taken to mean the troops were authorized to open fire on protesters as required.
