The Governor of Georgia has declared an emergency and is calling up 1000 National Guard troops after violence spiraled upward in the state capital of Atlanta over the weekend.

There was an outbreak of violence bursting across the city that saw five people dead, including an 8-year-old girl, and at least 30 people injured, while the headquarters of the Georgia State Patrol was ransacked.

The National Guard troops will be dispatched to protect three locations in the capital city of Atlanta:

The state Capitol, which has been the focus of protests; the Governor’s Mansion; and the recently-vandalized headquarters of the Georgia State Patrol.

The Department of Public Safety’s headquarters, is where close to 100 demonstrators set fire to part of the building.

Governor Kemp slammed Atlanta city officials whom he said “have failed to quell ongoing violence” over an especially turbulent few months that have seen the resignation of the police chief, increased sickouts of officers and two officers charged in connection with a killing.

The Atlanta Police Department is offering a reward in the killing of 8-year-old Secoriea Turner, who was shot Saturday night near the Wendy’s where Rayshard Brooks was killed by a police officer.

A frustrated Atlanta Mayor Keisha Bottoms, decried the violence that rocked the city over the Fourth of July weekend, asking for information about a group who blocked a road before firing into a car killing the 8-year-old child.

The Governor also said that protests were hijacked by criminals with a dangerous agenda and now innocent Georgians were being targeted, shot and left for dead, saying they must protect the lives and livelihoods of all Georgians.
