Multiple giant earthquakes ranging between 6.5 to 8.1 magnitude have been hitting New Zealand today as the region has been rocked by various earthquakes in sundry places.
It started in early morning with a 7.3 magnitude earthquake neear Gisborne, New Zealand, which also caused tsunami fears with warnings put out for people to move to higher ground.
Those tsunami warnings were lifted although tens of thousands of New Zealanders said they felt the quake since the U.S. Geological Survey said the first major quake was shallow at a depth of 6 miles under the ocean about 111 miles northeast of Gisborne.
Then just a few hours later in the late morning another big earthquake hit. This time with a 7.4 magnitude near the Kermadec Islands, New Zealand.
During these earthquakes the New Zealand Emergency Management Authority advised anyone near the coast who felt the quakes to move to the closest highest ground.
As they said tsunami activity could continue for several hours and the threat must be regarded as real until the warnings would be cancelled.
The quakes were felt across New Zealand with them reported to be felt in cities including Auckland, Wellington, Hamilton, Whanganui and Tauranga.
Then about a couple of hours later in early afternoon a giant 8.1 magnitude earthquake hit again in the area near the Kermadec Islands, New Zealand.
This severe earthquake set off tsunami warnings again, with Hawaii News reporting that Hawaii was also now under a tsunami watch following the strong earthquake off New Zealand.
Tsunami warning center officials said the watch was triggered due to the size and proximity of the temblor, as they were still looking into the threat level to Hawaii.
At this point, the monster earthquake was the third to strike the New Zealand region in a span of about six hours.
Then at time of this writing, about an hour after the big 8.1-m quake, there has been a 6.5 magnitude earthquake that was downgraded to a 6.1-M, also near the Kermadec Islands, with a 5.6 magnitude aftershock following.
It was a magnitude 6.3 quake that hit the city of Christchurch in 2011, killing 185 people and destroying much of its downtown.
After this series of large quakes the New Zealand Emergency Management Authority is currently advising people near the coast to move immediately to the nearest high ground, out of all tsunami evacuation zones, or as far inland as possible. And to not stay at home.
