At least 59 were killed and more than 500 others injured in a Las Vegas shooting rampage that is the deadliest mass shooting in modern American history.
A gunman in a high-rise hotel overlooking the Las Vegas Strip opened fire on a country music festival. The gunman, identified by police as Stephen Paddock, was later found dead by officers on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino.
The massacre marked the nation’s latest outbreak of gunfire and bloodshed to erupt in a public place, again spreading terror in an American city transformed into a war zone.
The carnage in Las Vegas surpassed the 49 people slain in June 2016 by a gunman in Orlando inspired by the Islamic State.
“It was an act of pure evil,” Trump said during remarks from the White House. “We cannot fathom their pain, we cannot imagine their loss.”
