A strong 7.3 magnitude earthquake has struck at Fukushima, Japan, where it triggered a tsunami warning and a fire alarm at a nuclear plant while plunging millions into darkness and causing buildings to rock in Tokyo.
Fukushima is the site of a 9.0-magnitude earthquake and resulting tsunami 11 years ago, whose anniversary was just a few days ago, that caused a tidal wave leaving 18,500 people dead or missing and a nuclear melt-down at the Fukushima nuclear power plant.
The nuclear disaster from 2011 is still on-going as parts of the Fukushima prefecture are still nuclear radiated no-go zones and there is still a struggle to clean-up nuclear fuel and water at the plant site.
This new huge earthquake killed two people and injured 94 people rocking buildings and cutting power to more than two million homes in Japan according to Japanese officials.
It also triggered a fire alarm at a turbine at the crumpled Fukushima plant, authorities said, adding they were monitoring the situation.
But Japan’s nuclear authority said no abnormalities were detected at the site that went into meltdown 11 years ago when it was battered by the 9.0-magnitude quake.
Meanwhile authorities said as many as 6,820 people were evacuated from their homes in Watari Town, Miyagi Prefecture, dues to the tsunami warning according to local news site NHK.
A government spokesman said that calls had been inundating police and ambulances in Fukushima and Miyagi from the earthquake and that an emergency taskforce had been set up and warned residents of possible strong aftershocks over the next week.
