Iran increased the level of conflict with the U.S. in Iraq with a new rocket strike on a U.S. military base in Iraq – at least the fourth attack on U.S. facilities in the region in just a few days.

The U.S. headquarters overseeing military operations in Iraq said 14 rockets landed on the base housing U.S. and allied troops and its perimeter, causing injuries and damage to facilities there.

And Iran’s state media said that one of their pro-Iranian militia’s in Iraq were responsible for the rocket attack against Al-Asad Air Base in western Iraq.

Iranian media also said that an attack was carried out simultaneously against a U.S. base at an oil field in eastern Syria by pro-Iranian militia, which U.S. officials did not respond to media inquiries about the strike in Syria.

Also in recent days, the Al-Asad base came under a similar rocket strike on July 5. The next day, an armed drone crashed into Irbil air base in northern Iraq – a key U.S. hub for operations in the region – while defenses at the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad also shot down an armed drone hovering over its complex.

U.S. troops in eastern Syria also came under rocket fire as Iranian militia fired multiple rockets at U.S. troops there and the American forces responded by firing artillery at them.

The escalating violence in recent days by Iran on U.S. interests in the Middle East poses a pressing challenge for the Biden administration, which has not yet been able to form a response to Iran’s clear acts of aggression on the U.S.
