The leaders of Israel’s coalition government have decided to dissolve the Knesset and hold early elections in Israel for a new government.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s right-wing coalition has been trying to govern with a razor-thin one seat majority, and has been struggling to pass legislation.

At a press conference at the Knesset on Monday, Netanyahu confirmed “the heads of the coalition parties decided, in agreement and unanimously, to disperse the Knesset and call for new elections….”

Netanyahu’s government has been battling difficulties on several fronts causing resignations and defections from his right-wing coalition making it impossible to continue.

The political turbulence comes against the backdrop of criminal investigations that have hit Netanyahu and his inner circle.

Israeli police say there is enough evidence to indict Netanyahu on charges of bribery, fraud, and breach of trust in three separate investigations. Netanyahu denies any wrongdoing.
