Recently a rare sight in Malibu had actors and surfers alike freaking out. From the valley to the beaches, people were doing a double-take as white powder fell from the sky.

One resident, Xavier Bias walked out of a Whole Foods, and saw another woman looking to the ground puzzled at the white stuff covering the sidewalk.

The woman wasn’t sure exactly what she was looking at. Bias, who is originally from the East Coast, quickly set her straight. It was snow.

“People didn’t know what it was,” Bias said. “I was like, no, this is snow.”

It was a strange day in southern California, where snow dropped at extremely low elevation levels, creating a winter wonderland for a short while. Snow fell in Malibu, Pasadena, West Hollywood, Northridge, San Bernardino, Thousand Oaks and other unexpected places.

David Sweet, a meteorologist in the area with the National Weather Service said, “This is probably the coldest storm system I’ve seen … we’ve had cold mornings and freeze conditions, but I don’t remember seeing anything quite this cold.”

Falling snow in some areas gave schools a rare snow day. “It’s going to be a fairly unusual day,” Sweet said, “to say the least.”

Actor Jerry O’Connell of “Stand By Me” said “Calabasas, California, where the Kardashians live,” he said in a video on Twitter, pointing at specks of snow on a car. “It’s snowing right now. Look at this. Snow. Snow. Not hail. Snow.”

In Rancho Cucamonga both patrons and workers emptied a restaurant and pointed their phones skyward all recording the unusual event.

Dramatic weather has continued to happen in 2019 with events happening in places and in ways that are strange and unusual.
