The Korean War is apparently back on, as both sides are in the early stages of mobilization. North Korea is moving military assets to along its eastern coast and South Korea announced the U.S. will soon be repositioning “strategic assets” closer to the Korean Peninsula.
North Korea’s foreign minister, Ri Yong Ho made an attention-grabbing statement saying that “Trump claimed that our leadership wouldn’t be around much longer and declared a war on our country.”
Chung Eui-yong, chief of South Korea’s National Security Office, disclosed that the U.S. had promised in writing to move forces to support the South. “The U.S. has pledged to expand the rotational deployment of its strategic assets near the Korean Peninsula.” The Pentagon, Chung said, “will begin as early as late this year, and this will help us expand our defense capabilities.”
Chung did not detail which strategic U.S. assets he was referring to, although the phrase he used is generally understood to mean nuclear weapons.
North Korea’s Ri has also made other provocative declarations, warning they could shoot U.S. planes out of the sky when nearing their borders, and saying that a North Korean strike on the U.S. mainland is inevitable.
The situation is becoming positioned to deteriorate quickly, as the North Koreans and Americans begin to position their militaries closer to a war footing.
