As protests were happening in the nation’s capital at the Lafayette Square near the White House, intense thunderstorms charged into the Washington, D.C. area Thursday night.

Where lightning was unleashed that struck the Washington Monument in the capital and injured National Guardsmen.

The guardsmen were struck just after midnight within the Lafayette Square perimeter near the intersection of 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue.

The lightning injured two National Guardsmen who were taken to a hospital with injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening.

The storm’s frequent lightning hit the tip of the Washington Monument, which was captured in viral footage from TV station WUSA9, and viewed more than 8 million times.

The storms developed gaining strength as they swept into the capital with most of the protesters dispersing and seeking shelter.

As the storms were passing through the District, lightning also struck a home in North Potomac, igniting a fire and causing severe damage.

The storms also contained damaging winds with the fire department responding to calls for wires and trees down because of the storm.

As the rain soaked the soil in many areas, the Weather Service also issued a flash flood watch for much of the region.
