Air-raid sirens sounded across southern Israel sending Israelis running for bomb shelters as 200 rockets rained down that were fired from the Gaza Strip, according to Israel Defense Forces.

But again miraculously, no one was killed. The Iron Dome aerial defense system intercepted dozens of the incoming rockets, per the IDF. It was reported the rocket barrage continued for some 12 hours.

MDA, Israel’s emergency medical service, said two Israelis have been wounded, a 50-year-old man was treated for shrapnel wounds after getting injured in one of the town streets. It also said a 80-year-old woman was “severely injured” in a nearby town of Kiryat Gat after suffering shrapnel wounds.

In response the IDF said it had launched air and artillery strikes against 120 Gaza sites belonging to Hamas, a militant group that controls the Gaza Strip, and against groups including Islamic Jihad. It blamed both for the attacks.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health says one person has died as a result of the Israeli strikes, and seven others have been wounded.

The missile barrage comes after the IDF said that shots were fired at Israeli troops from southern Gaza on Friday, injuring two soldiers.

In response, an IDF aircraft targeted a military post of Hamas, an Islamic militant group that has ruled over the territory since 2007. Hamas said that two of its members were killed and three were wounded in that strike.

A Hamas spokesman said in a statement they would “continue to respond to the crimes by the occupation and it will not allow it to shed the blood of our people.”  But he made no explicit claim for Hamas having fired the 200 rockets into Israel.

Israel has also announced that it is closing the two border crossings between Israel and Gaza, as well as closing the Gaza fishing zone in light of the rocket fire.
