An earthquake with a magnitude of 6 has struck an area in northeast India, posing a serious threat to thousands of people.

The powerful earthquake, which originated in Tezpur, Assam, had a depth of 34 kilometers when it hit and two aftershocks were also reported within minutes of the initial quake.

Police officials in the location said the earthquake was the biggest they could remember but there have not been any casualties reported.

People in distress ran out of their homes streaming into the streets for fear of fresh tremors, with some saying the quake had left cracks in their homes.

One witness said their entire multi-storied apartment had massive damage with roofs and walls caving in but luckily no one got injured.

India’s disaster management officials were assessing reports for destruction or casualties.

The Health Minister told Reuters, “We don’t have reports of any casualties but we are seeing images and visuals of extensive damage.”
