A massive 7.4 magnitude earthquake hit Mexico on Tuesday morning, sending residents of the capital fleeing into the streets and triggering a tsunami warning for the coasts of Central America.

The earthquake’s center was south of Crucecita, in Oaxaca state near the beach resort of Huatulco on the Pacific coast, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

It’s reported that communications with Oaxaca have not been re-established.

The temblor had a reported depth of about 20 miles. And the quake was also felt in Guatemala and throughout south and central Mexico.

In a video recorded in a courtyard of the National Palace, President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said that so far there are no reports of damage. And in Mexico City, more than 700 kilometers away, the mayor said emergency protocols were activated.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said waves from the quake could threaten the coasts of Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras.

The National Weather Service said that “hazardous” tsunami waves from the quake are possible within 620 miles of the epicenter along the Pacific coast.

Officials also said that while a tsunami threat exists for parts of the Pacific located closer to the epicenter, there is no threat for Hawaii or the U.S. West Coast.

Mari González of the Princess Mayev hotel in Huatulco told the Associated Press that the earthquake “was strong, very strong,” and that after the initial quake they were still strong aftershocks continuing.

The quake along the coast was strong enough to be felt in central and southern Mexico, swaying buildings in Mexico City and sending thousands into the streets.

This latest quake was more powerful than a 7.1 magnitude quake in 2017 that caused widespread damage in the state of Puebla as well as across Mexico City. At least 370 people were killed and thousands were injured in that quake.
