A massive tornado tore through eastern Alabama leaving at least 23 people dead — including children — and countless more missing amid the “catastrophic” damage, according to officials.

“We’ve still got people being pulled out of rubble,” Lee County Coroner Bill Harris said as crews searched through the wreckage and debris.

The tornado was one of at least a dozen twisters to touch down in the southeast in a huge outbreak.

“Our hearts go out to those who lost their lives in the storms that hit Lee County today,” Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey said in a tweet. “Praying for their families & everyone whose homes or businesses were affected.”

AccuWeather reported this was the deadliest tornado outbreak in the U.S. since May 2013, when a massive and devastating tornado killed 24 people in Moore, Oklahoma.

They said this was also more than double the total number of tornado-related fatalities across the United States in all of 2018.

Over 12,000 customers are still without power in Alabama and Georgia following the severe thunderstorms. And colder air will sweep into the Southeast behind the severe weather with temperatures dropping into the 30s, so those without power who rely on electric heat need to find ways to say warm.

The tornado caused apocalyptic-looking heavy damage with many reports of many damaged or destroyed homes and businesses with one of the tornadoes reported as at least an EF4 and one-half mile wide.

One survivor of the massive tornado said they rode out the huge storm in their bathtub, where they survived but were still tossed into the forest.
