A meteor fireball created a spectacular light show as it streaked across the night sky above Vermont but then reports say it fragmented violently producing a loud boom and shaking buildings.

Many eyewitnesses reported seeing the fireball streaking through the night sky which experts say was traveling at 42,000 miles per hour as it passed over Vermont.

Then the meteor exploded violently creating a pressure wave which produced a loud boom that was heard for miles while also shaking buildings.

The pressure wave also traveled into the ground causing tremors which were picked up by seismic instruments in the area. Three nearby stations reported that the meteor released the energy equivalent of 440 pounds of TNT.

Other witnesses on social media said they heard a loud sound like “big trucks crashing” while another described feeling the house shake and hearing a “quick higher pitch shrieking.”

Some people reporting the fireball were initially confused as to what it was. One said “I thought it was a missile,” and another said “It was a super bright white and broke up into a few pieces.” And this spectator said, “I was very excited to see it, … it’s a phenomenon I will never forget.”
