Russia has accused Israel of a hostile provocation and threatened retaliation after Moscow blamed Israel for indirectly causing a Russian military plane to be shot down near Syria’s Mediterranean coast.

Russia’s Defence Ministry is holding Israel responsible for Syrian anti-aircraft systems accidentally shooting down the Russian plane, killing all 15 on board, saying in a statement that Israeli pilots were using the Russian aircraft as a shield causing it to be in the line of fire of the Syrian defenses, and blames Israel for causing the incident.

A Russian defence ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov said “As a result of the irresponsible actions of the Israeli military, 15 Russian service personnel perished. This absolutely does not correspond to the spirit of Russian-Israeli partnership.”

He went on to say that, “We reserve the right to take commensurate measures in response.” It was reported that Mr Konashenkov also described the Israeli military’s actions as hostile and an act of provocation.

Russian defence minister Sergei Shoigu telephoned his Israeli counterpart Avigdor Lieberman to say that Israel was fully responsible for the latest incident, Moscow said. “Sergei Shoigu stated that the blame for the downed Russian plane and the death of the crew lies entirely on the Israeli side,” the Russian ministry said.

This is another sign pointing to how an event can trigger an international conflict between nations that could lead to an escalation of war in this area prophesied in the Book of Revelation along the Euphrates River Valley.
