Astronaut James Irwin who went to the moon and then became a Christian minister, said he  “felt the touch of God” when he discovered the Genesis Rock when walking on the moon.

Mr Irwin, who was the eighth man to walk on the moon and the first to use the Lunar Rover vehicle, became a born-again Christian following His Apollo mission.

And he is credited with uncovering one of the most important space discoveries of his era – the Genesis Rock. Analysis of the white rock he discovered on the moon was said to reveal that it formed in the beginning of the solar system.

It’s reported that it was revealed in a documentary, that the finding was made thanks to a sign from God, according to a close friend of Irwin. Who said that Irwin told him, ‘I swear to God, I felt the touch of somebody, God, tap me on my shoulder and said – look there’.

Irwin believed that it was God who made him spot the Genesis Rock and bring it back to earth.

Irwin viewed his Apollo 15 moon journey as a religious experience and said it led him to retire from the astronaut corps and found the High Flight Foundation, an interdenominational evangelistic organization.

This led to Irwin also leading several expeditions to Mount Ararat, Turkey, in an unsuccessful search for the remains of Noah’s Ark.

Irwin said it was because of the moon rock discovery that “I thought the Lord wanted me involved in finding artifacts from the Genesis time that would be more important than the Genesis Rock we found on the moon.”

Before he died Irwin was the recipient of Distinguished Service Medals from NASA and the Air Force. He also authored the book “To Rule the Night” about his voyage to the moon and his journey with God.

“Some people make light of it and ask how can a technical person, an astronaut, believe in the Bible,” he once told an interviewer. “I guess I was also a skeptic in my early days, but I’ve come to believe what the Bible says as being true.”
