A powerful 6.3-magnitude earthquake has hit the Philippines today, rattling and swaying buildings in Manila and sparking evacuations across the city.

There was extensive damage and deaths from the killer quake.

At least two buildings, according to a local official in the town of Porac, collapsed and five people are believed to have died so far. Three in Porac and one in the town of Lubao.

Another report said at least 8 people were killed when the powerful earthquake struck the Philippines’ main island of Luzon, and that officials feared up to 40 people could be trapped in the rubble of a collapsed commercial building.

Initial images coming out of the Philippines showed collapsed buildings, a damaged airport, and cars crushed by debris. At least 17 aftershocks were recorded by Filipino volcanologists.

One building in the capital, Anchor Sky-suites luxurious apartment complex, was captured on camera swaying so heavily that water began cascading down from the water garden on top of the building.

Lilia Pineda, governor of Pampanga province said that people were still trapped in a four-story building, adding that 20 people had so far been rescued and taken to hospital as night fell.

Thousands of office workers dashed out of buildings in Manila, many wearing hard hats, and residents ran out of houses in panic. Thousands of people lined the streets after authorities ordered mass evacuations across the country.

An elevated train service was halted and passengers were made to walk into the nearest stations. Several towns briefly lost power on the main northern Luzon island, officials said.
