A powerful 7.8 earthquake struck the Alaska Peninsula triggering a tsunami warning that sent residents fleeing to higher ground before it was called off.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the 7.8 magnitude quake struck off the coast with it centered in waters 65 miles south-southeast of Perryville, Alaska at a depth of 17 miles.
The quake initially triggered a tsunami warning for South Alaska, the Alaska Peninsula and the Aleutian Islands.
The tsunami warning prompted coastal residents to evacuate to higher ground, with social media posts showing long lines of people fleeing towns like Homer and Kodiak as tsunami sirens wailed in the background.
Tsunami warning sirens could be heard blaring in videos posted on social media as residents heeded warnings to evacuate.
This quake was more powerful than the magnitude 7.1 earthquake that caused damage in the Anchorage area in November 2018, with seismologists saying this earthquake released about 15 times as much energy as that earthquake.
According to the Alaska Earthquake Center at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, more than a dozen aftershocks of magnitude 4.0 or higher were reported immediately after the earthquake.
The Alaska-Aleutian Trench is also where a magnitude 9.2 quake in 1964 was centered. That remains the second most powerful earthquake ever recorded.
That temblor and ensuing tsunami caused widespread damage and killed 131 people, some as far away as Oregon and California.
The Biblical Prophecies of Jesus (Matthew 24, Luke 21) foretell that earthquakes will be a sign indicating the nearing of the end of this age.
These events and conditions happening now are warning signs pointing to the nearing fulfillment of the Last Days prophecies at the end of this age revealing it’s time to prepare now for the nearing appearance of Jesus Christ for His Church by being born again spiritually into the Kingdom of God as Jesus said we must (John 3) and His Apostles who were authorized (Matthew 16:19) described how (Acts 2).
