A powerful earthquake struck southwestern Mexico at the beach resort of Acapulco which shook buildings damaging them while also causing falling debris and rock falls.
The quake of magnitude 7.0 hit 11 miles northeast of Acapulco and shook the hillsides around the city, downing trees and pitching large boulders onto roads, causing power outages.
Social media showed widespread damage near the Mexican port city that hit with such a force that it was able to shake the capital Mexico City, some 230 miles away.
Also an upmarket hotel in Acapulco, a popular holiday resort, was damaged by the earthquake, with walls crumbling onto the floor and cement blocks falling as a result of the tremor.
230 miles away in neighborhoods of Mexico City, lights went off and scared residents rushed out, some in little more than their pajamas, as residents huddled together in the rain, holding young children or pets.
Mexican state power utility the Comision Federal de Electricidad said in a statement that 1.6 million users had been affected by the quake in Mexico City, the adjacent State of Mexico, and the states of Guerrero, Morelos and Oaxaca.
One resident said it reminded them of the 1985 quake that also struck the Mexican capital killing thousands of people.
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said this current quake, initially measured at a magnitude of 7.4 and later downgraded to 7.0, was relatively shallow, just 12 miles below the surface, which would have amplified the shaking effect.
