Multiple news sites are reporting Russia’s President Putin as saying that ISIS has seized nearly 700 hostages in parts of Syria controlled by U.S.-backed forces.

And that Several U.S. and European citizens were taken hostage by the Islamic State as well  in Syria with them threatening to kill hostages.

Putin said “According to our data, several citizens of both the United States and European countries were taken hostage. Everyone is silent, some kind of silence, as if nothing is happening.”

He added that “Representatives of the Islamic State were left in several localities, and recently they began to expand their area of ​​presence – 130 families were taken there, almost 700 people, hostages.”

He added that ISIS was expanding its control in territory controlled by U.S. and U.S.-backed forces in Syria. He did not specify what the terrorists’ demands were.

Russian news agency TASS said: “Militants demand that Syrian Democratic Forces fighting on the side of the US-led coalition release captured IS terrorists and concede several territories on the eastern bank of the Euphrates River. The Islamic State will execute hostage every day until their demands are met, the source said.

They went on to say that “IS attacked a refugee camp while the Syrian Democratic Forces tried to launch an offensive with support from the US-led coalition. The source added that the failure of the Syrian Democratic Forces is due to multiple mistakes made by US military coordinating the operation.

With Putin being the canny operator that he is, it seems strange that he would make such a claim without intel and data backing it up. Also, so far there has been a scarcity of information from the U.S. forces affirming or denying Putin’s claims.
