A large commercial jet from Dubai caused a scare on Wednesday after a pilot radioed that it would be landing at New York’s Kennedy Airport with 100 passengers and crew members who fell ill on the flight. One witness on the flight said people throughout the plane were constantly coughing and some vomiting.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention immediately quarantined the double-decker Emirates aircraft holding 520 passengers with a large-scale emergency response when the aircraft touched down so it could evaluate the 100 passengers who had coughs, headaches, sore throats and fevers.

Officials said 10 people including passengers and crew members were hospitalized with the rest eventually cleared to continue their travels while the CDC sought to determine what caused the sickness. They eventually declared it as influenza.

One passenger said it was basically chaos right when they first landed when the pilot announced that there was a health issue and many people were sick. Another passenger said people were worried because they didn’t know what it was, and there were the health officials with masks and equipment to check passengers.

“It’s like the plane from hell” he said. The incident shows the potential how a pestilence could quickly spread around the world with mass infections in today’s modern world-wide travel within a day.
