A weather phenomenon called a medicane, which is a rare, tropical-like cyclone that forms in the Mediterranean Sea, is striking Europe with heavy rain and strong winds into southern Greece and western Turkey.

Accuweather described this medicane as a rare, tropical-like cyclone that forms in the Mediterranean Sea whose formation is similar to that of a subtropical system in the Atlantic Ocean. But medicanes are typically smaller cyclones with a shorter lifespan.

These cyclones originate from non-tropical systems that feed off the warm waters of the Mediterranean and take on tropical characteristics. But unlike a subtropical storm in the Atlantic, medicanes are not named.

This medicane is expected to bring adverse impacts to southern Greece and western Turkey. Already, in Athens, toppled trees and power lines caused power outages as the storm approached, and schools were closed throughout the capital while airline and ferry service delays mounted.

Rounds of rain will spread across these areas with some of the rain pouring down heavily at times, which can trigger flash flooding and mudslides.

Forecasts are saying there can be widespread gusts of 95 km/h (60 mph) and gusts to 130 and 145 km/h (80 and 90 mph). The winds will stir dangerously rough waters across the eastern Mediterranean Sea.
