Dozens of children across the United States have developed a rare polio-like illness, but the reason for this spike in cases remains a mystery, according to health officials.

So far, more than half of all US states have had confirmed or possible cases of acute flaccid myelitis (AFM), the polio-like illness that can cause paralysis and mostly affects children, although the cause remains a mystery.

As of Oct. 16, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced it had received reports of 127 cases of people with the condition in 2018.

AFM is a condition that affects the nervous system and causes muscle weakness, according to the CDC. In particular, the condition can cause weakness in the arms and legs along with loss of muscle tone and problems with reflexes. Other symptoms include facial drooping, difficulty moving the eyes, difficulty swallowing and slurred speech.

This unexpected spike in AFM, “is a mystery” to health officials, Dr. Nancy Messonnier, the director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases at the CDC, said in a press conference.

“The number we’re reporting today is substantially larger than in previous months this year,” Messonnier said. “We know this can be frightening for parents,” Messonnier said. “I urge parents to seek medical care right away if you or your child develops sudden weakness or loss of muscle tone in the arms or legs.”

“We have not been able to find the cause for the majority of these AFM cases,” Messonnier said. “There’s a lot we don’t know about AFM, and I am frustrated that despite our efforts we haven’t been able to identify the cause of this mystery illness.”
