A record swarm of earthquakes was triggered when a long-dormant volcano has begun to awaken.
The swarm of 85,000 earthquakes is the strongest earthquake activity ever recorded in the region of Antarctica. Where the long-dormant underwater volcano near Antarctica has woken up.
Seismologists said that the the quakes were caused by a finger of hot magma poking into the crust of the earth which they said is a process that normally occurs over a geologic timescale but is happening now much faster within a human life span.
The record swarm occurred around the Orca Seamount, a previously dormant volcano that rises 2,950 feet (900 meters) from the seafloor in the Bransfield Strait, a narrow passage between the South Shetland Islands and the northwestern tip of Antarctica.
The two largest earthquakes in the series of the swarm were a magnitude 5.9 quake and a later magnitude 6.0 quake.
The quakes moved the ground on King George Island around 4.3 inches and the scientists suspect that the movement of magma into the earth’s crust largely accounts for the dramatic shifting of the ground.
Scientists at the research stations on King George Island, one of the South Shetland Islands, were the first to feel the rumblings of the swarm of quakes and then word soon got out to their colleagues around the world.
This event is the most powerful seismic explosion ever recorded in the region of Antarctica. And following this volcanic explosion and earth tremors caused by magma flowing into the earth’s crust, the region will likely see subsequent, similar geological phenomena in the future.
