The skies over Tokyo were lit up by an explosive extraterrestrial object that also came with a loud noise, according to some reports.

Reports say that a fireball in the sky occurring that generates such noise is a rare event, especially when it passes over one of the largest cities in the world.

Video taken by local residents show the round object tearing through the clouds with a bright tail above Japan’s capital city, Tokyo, and as it streaks across the sky, the ball appears to increase in brightness until seemingly blowing up.

The International Meteor Organization reported that the fireball was visible from a large part of Japan’s Kanto region and said they were able to calculate the source energy of the object at about 165 tons of TNT.

Many people reported hearing a great noise from the fireball which is considered rare since people rarely hear anything with events such as this.

Some residents reported they heard it explode, saying they heard something like a sonic boom after the fireball exploded. While others said they heard a noise like a large bang when the witnesses said the sky suddenly lit up.

One of the locals said after the fireball exploded, then a few minutes later they heard a roar that could be heard indoors. Other residents said the explosion sounded like a thunder.

Japanese media also reported that locals in the Kanto region had witnessed the sighting when they woke up to something like a rumble of thunder.

The event was so large with so many witnesses reporting they saw and heard it, that Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga announced at a national press conference that authorities were gathering information about the event.
