A strong earthquake rocked Ecuador today, sending tremors as far as Colombia near Venezuela. The quake, initially measured as magnitude 7.7 but is now scaled down to 7.5, and struck near the border with Peru.

The United States Geological Survey said the quake happened 71 miles southeast of the town of Palora, in the Morona Santiago province. It struck at a depth of 132 kilometers (82 miles).

Tremors were felt in Ecuador, Peru, and also parts of Colombia, according to reports. Peru’s official geophysics institute said it also registered two aftershocks of 6.06 and 6.6 magnitude in the 30 minutes that followed the first tremor.

One resident in Cuenca, Ecuador, 157 miles from the epicentre, described the quake as very strong, while a second resident in the same city reported experiencing “a good 30 second shake.”

Emergency services helped with evacuations in areas worst hit by the earthquake. No tsunami warning has been issued but aftershocks are still expected. Miraculously, there has been no reports of serious injuries.

Ecuador’s President said that preliminary reports of the quakes near Macas (the provincial capital of Morona Santiago) did not show major damage. But he said the quakes were felt all over the country.
