Never before have winds this powerful ever been recorded for a storm in the Atlantic Ocean. From where the American eclipse ended in the main development region for tropical cyclones in late August, has come Hurricane Irma.
A super-storm that is the strongest ever Atlantic storm, now known as the most powerful Atlantic hurricane in recorded history.
Maximum sustained winds are 185 mph but there are even higher gusts. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 60 miles from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 175 miles.
Forecasters say Hurricane Irma’s intensity will fluctuate during the next day or two, but it is still expected to remain a powerful Category 4 or 5 hurricane during the next couple of days, according to the National Hurricane Center.
But the terrifying warning of an MIT meteorology professor is even more foreboding; if it stays on track and reaches the Florida Straits, the water there is warm enough that the already “intense” storm could become much worse with wind speeds potentially reaching 225 mph.
As authorities on the Leeward Islands of Antigua and Barbuda warned people to seek protection, the statement closed with: “May God protect us all.”
