A new supercharged mutant coronavirus is spreading quickly through England and is expected to also go global despite more than 30 nations having already closed their borders to travel with Britain.

U.K. officials warn the new variant of the virus could be as high as 70% more contagious than the various strains already circulating.

Since the pandemic took hold in March, the world has learned largely what to expect from the coronavirus. But now the rulebook is being rewritten in Britain, where people are facing a mutated virus that appears to be much better at infecting people.

Ravi Gupta, professor of clinical microbiology at the University of Cambridge, told BBC News: “… This virus is potentially on a pathway for vaccine escape, it has taken the first couple of steps towards that.”

U.S. Army scientists are now carrying out their own tests to ensure that the vaccine is still effective against the new mutant strain. Experts have suggested that the British strain appears to be so fast-spreading that it may become the dominant strain globally.

The effect of the mutation is already making itself clear in Britain where Health Secretary Matt Hancock told the nation Sunday that the strain was “out of control.”

Experts fear it could already be too late to stop the mutant strain of COVID from racing around the planet.
