Syria’s envoy to the United Nations warned Tuesday that if the world body did not halt Israeli strikes on his country, Syria would retaliate with an attack on Israel’s Ben Gurion International Airport outside Tel Aviv.

Speaking at the UN Security Council after a series of Israeli airstrikes into Syria, envoy Bashar Jaafari said Israel was only able to act freely in Syria because it had the backing of the US, UK and France in the Security Council.

Syrian state media Sana quoted Jaafari as saying that if the UN Security Council didn’t adopt measures to stop Israel, “Syria would practice its legitimate right of self-defense and respond to the Israeli aggression on Damascus International Airport in the same way on Israel’s Tel Aviv airport.”

While Israel has repeatedly hit targets inside Syria in recent years to try to stop the transfer of arms to Hezbollah from Iran and the entrenchment of Iranian forces, Syria has rarely responded.

It’s unclear if Syria has had any ability to strike at Ben Gurion Airport in the past, but now that Russia has provided the S-300 missile system to Syria they could make the strike.

As a ground-to-ground missile this system has an operational engagement range of 155 miles. The calculated flying distance from Damascus to Tel Aviv is only equal to 132 miles.

Satellite images showed that Syria had initially deployed the S-300 missiles from Russia back in October, 2018. And now those S-300’s may be coming up as operational. That could be why Syria has done nothing and waited until now to make this threat.

The Syrian envoy to the UN, Dr. Bashar Al-Ja’afari, asked it this way, “Does drawing the attention of the war-makers in this Council require us to exercise our legitimate right to self-defense and respond to Israeli aggression on Damascus International Airport by responding in the same way on Tel Aviv Airport?”

The threat is unmistakable and the making of it implies the ability to deliver on the threat has now come up as available. But any attempt to do so would be viewed by Israel as a major escalation with serious prophetic consequences in the Middle East.
