Texas has been rocked by a second 5.4 magnitude earthquake in a month.
The earthquake that struck west Texas could be one of the strongest on record in the state according to the Associated Press.
The Midland Bureau of the National Weather Service said that it felt the seismic activity and that it could be one of the strongest earthquakes in the history of the state of Texas.
The 5.4 magnitude quake struck about 14 miles (22 kilometers) north of Midland. The AP reported that people felt the earthquake as far away as Amarillo, more than 200 miles away.
Residents felt the quake near Midland, Texas, and as far away as Lubbock and Abilene San Angelo. Locals also reported cracked tiles, walls and ceilings.
It comes just a month after another 5.4 magnitude quake hit the area. On November 16, a magnitude 5.4 tremor struck west of Pecos, Texas. It was the largest earthquake in the state since 1995.
The Texas Tribune reported that the Railroad Commission of Texas, which regulates the state’s oil and gas industry, has launched an investigation into whether the seismic activity is linked to fracking.
The total number of earthquakes in the area has increased in recent years. Bloomberg reported this April that Texas was poised to replace California and Alaska as America’s “earthquake capital.”
