President Donald Trump has fired FBI Director James Comey thereby eliminating the man who was responsible for the bureau’s investigation into whether members of Trump’s campaign team colluded with Russia in last year’s election.
The bombshell announcement sent shock and surprise through Washington as the career was ended of a man who was once seen as the unimpeachable and nonpartisan ideal of how a law enforcement officer should behave. But then Comey saw his reputation tarnished through actions he took during the toxic politics of the 2016 presidential campaign.
But the surprise move has many members of congress both Democrat and Republican wondering about the reasons and timing.
Previous reports of Russian connections to the Trump campaign have been numerous. Such as Trumps National Security Adviser Michael Flynn who was dismissed after being caught by intelligence agencies colluding with the Russians and then lying to U.S. administration officials about it.
Also, Jeff Sessions who is Trumps U.S. Attorney General, has recused himself from the investigation into Trumps campaign on Russia ties because of reports he himself had lied to Congress about conversations he also had with Russia. It was also Sessions who recommended to Trump that the FBI Director, who was the person leading the investigation, be fired.
Trump, who has previously praised the Russian President Putin, has stirred the tempest of the Russian clouds hanging over the U.S. White House by saying “Your Fired” to the FBI Director.
