U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that the US will recognize Israel’s sovereignty over the Golan Heights captured from Syria in the 1967 war.
It is a dramatic move seen as likely to bolster Benjamin Netanyahu’s hopes to win re-election as Israel’s Prime Minister, but will also provoke international opposition.
Previous US administrations have treated the Golan Heights as an occupied Syrian territory, in line with UN security council resolutions. But Trump declared his break with that policy, in a tweet.
He said: “After 52 years it is time for the United States to fully recognize Israel’s sovereignty over the Golan Heights, which is of critical strategic and security importance to the State of Israel and Regional Stability!”
But critics say by defying a 52-year-old unanimously adopted UN resolution on “inadmissibility of the acquisition of territory by war”, Trump has also broken the postwar norm of refusing to recognize the forcible annexation of territory – which has underpinned western and international opposition to the Russian annexation of Crimea.
Netanyahu, the Israeli PM, quickly tweeted his gratitude for Trump’s gesture.
At a time when Iran seeks to use Syria as a platform to destroy Israel, President Trump boldly recognizes Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights,” the Israeli prime minister wrote. “Thank you President Trump!”
The announcement came as Netanyahu was hosting the US secretary of state, Mike Pompeo, in Jerusalem. Pompeo said: “President Trump tonight made the decision to recognize that hard-fought real estate, that important place is proper to be sovereign part of the state of Israel.”
The announcement is an important diplomatic coup for Netanyahu, less than three weeks before a close fought election, and four days before he is due to visit Washington. With many seeing this as Trump helping his friend to win re-election.
Trump continues to give huge political wins to Netanyahu, having already handed the Israeli leader a significant political gift, by recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and then moving the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
And now recognizing the Golan Heights as Israeli. But the timing of it is seen as gratuitously political and meant to boost Netanyahu’s electoral chances.
But this Golan move also re-affirms to all Arabs once again the Trump administration’s one-sided Mideast policy favoring Israel.
It also seems to confirm that this administration is pursuing the fundamental redrawing of the parameters for Arab-Israeli peace in the Mid-East.
Some think recognition of the Golan as Israeli may even pave the way for US recognition of Israeli sovereignty in the Palestinian occupied territories as well.
Where in a recent state department report on human rights, the administration also changed its description of the West Bank and Gaza from “occupied territories” to “Israeli-controlled territories”.
It seems the Trump administration is fundamentally re-positioning Israel strengthening their hand in any future negotiations with the Arabs & Palestinians for peace. And may be possibly planning to provide them board pieces they can give away in return for peace and re-building their temple in Jerusalem.
But the Trump administration is also moving Israel and the world toward the fulfillment of major Last Days prophecies.
For one, now Russia and its Arab allies in the Middle East will have even more justification to attack the Golan Heights, bringing about fulfillment of the Gog of Magog prophecy of Ezekiel chapters 38 and 39.
And another is with the Trump administration’s obviously one-sided Mideast policy favoring Israel, a further alienated Middle East Arab world will even more strongly reject the U.S. as a Mid-East peace broker.
Ultimately forcing the region to turn to a different peace broker that is prophesied in Daniel chapter 9, who will bring about a foretold agreement with Israel and others in the Mid-East that starts the last 7 years of human government of the earth bringing fulfillment of the Books of Daniel and Revelation Prophecy.
In our view, the Trump administration continues to move the world significantly closer to fulfillment of the Biblical prophecies (Zechariah 14, Luke 21) around Israel and Jerusalem in the Last Days signaling we are nearing the end of this age and the coming of Jesus Christ.
