Turkey’s government has launched an offensive into northern Syria with airstrikes and shelling targeting Syrian Kurdish fighters who have played a central role in aiding the U.S. in battling against the Islamic State militant group.
The operation, with Turkish ground forces also crossing the border later, came just after US President Trump’s announcement that the United States would not stand in Turkey’s way, and was withdrawing US troops from the area leaving the Kurd’s to face Turkey alone.
The Turkish invasion threatened to further fracture a war-shattered Syria as Ankara moved to create a “safe zone” at its border after failing to agree on its size and nature during negotiations with the United States.
Turkey’s goal is to push back the Syrian Kurds — considered enemies by Turkey — from the border region. Turkey also claims the buffer region would be fit for the resettlement of millions of Syrian refugees residing in Turkey.
A statement from the Turkish military said a “land operation” began in an area east of the Euphrates River, but gave no further details on the scope of the incursion.
A huge concern is the thousands of Islamic State prisoners and their families held by the Syrian Kurdish forces after the fall of the militant group’s self-declared “caliphate.” A security breakdown at the detention camps could open the way for the fighters and others to escape.
In the first hours of the operation, Turkish warplanes and artillery shelled towns along a 250-mile swath, stretching from Ain Issa, about 30 miles from the Euphrates River to Malikiyah, near Syria’s border with Iraq.
The Turkish offensive has already killed civilians with it reported at least five civilians were killed by the shelling according to the U.S. allied Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), as the Syrian Kurdish-led militias are known.
This region along the Euphrates River is foretold in prophecy (Revelation 9) to be the place where in the future the largest World War in the history of humankind will start.
These events and conditions happening now are signs pointing to the nearing fulfillment of the Last Days prophecies at the end of this age revealing it’s time to prepare for the nearing appearance of Jesus Christ for His Church by being born again spiritually into the Kingdom of God as Jesus said we must (John 3) and His Apostles who were authorized (Matthew 16:19) described how (Acts 2).
Preparing those Biblically born again into the Kingdom of God to be ready to escape all the things that will come to pass, in the wrath of the tribulation of Revelation prophecy, that comes upon the world of disobedience. As the born again Church is not appointed unto wrath (1 Thessalonians 1:10) but instead to salvation through the Lord Jesus Christ.
