Turkey says it is considering reviewing its relations with Washington if the United States does not extradite Turkish opposition cleric Fethullah Gulen, who Turkey’s President has blamed to be linked to a coup attempt in Turkey.
President Erdogan and other officials have blamed Gulen who is in a self-imposed exile in the United States and his supporters for the coup attempt, calling on the U.S. President to extradite the cleric.
Turkey is also widening its purge: after having arrested thousands of soldiers in the wake of a failed military coup, it is now sacking thousands of police officers – which also follows orders for the detention of thousands of judges and prosecutors in the aftermath of the coup. Many are including calls to reinstate the death penalty for plotters.
