U.S. President Trump has suddenly called for all U.S. troops to exit Syria while also declaring victory over ISIS there.

However, U.S. military news outlets as the Army Times and others are expressing surprise and amazement over his statements.

Trump’s reported call for a rapid withdrawal of U.S. forces from Syria comes in stark contrast to statements by his own national security adviser, military leaders, members of Congress and the larger strategic aims laid out to aid Kurdish forces, and counter both Iranian and Russian influence.

Many are wondering what has caused what seems as a snap decision.

Trump’s statement about victory over ISIS and subsequent media reports about a withdrawal of the estimated 2,000 U.S. troops from Syria caught top Pentagon officials flat footed.

The move by Trump also counters public statements by U.S. national security adviser John Bolton to the United Nations in September that seemed to remove withdrawal from the options, even after ISIS was defeated.

“We’re not going to leave as long as Iranian troops are outside Iranian borders, and that includes Iranian proxies and militias,” Bolton said at the time, also tying U.S. objectives to Iran in Syria.

But now suddenly with just a tweet, Trump declares victory over ISIS in Syria, while very recent U.N. and U.S. reports have said anywhere between 5000 to 25,000 or more still remain in Syria waiting to make a comeback.

Military officials are currently saying that the Coalition mission in northeast Syria remains unchanged and they are continuing normal operations.

But the indicators of this abrupt change by Trump in the U.S. position with respect to these efforts is sowing confusion.
