U.S. farmers say the extreme weather of 2019 has caused them to throw in the towel over this year as they have been pushed beyond the point of no return.
They say in the nation’s 18 major corn-producing states, there has been one refrain for the past few weeks: To plant or not to plant?
And there comes a point of no return, where the cost of planting outweighs potential remuneration, where yields dwindle and there just may not be enough days for plants to mature.
For many American farmers, they say that point is now.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture reported that domestic plantings of farmers’ total intended acreage, was at the slowest pace in more than 40 years.
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Centers for Environmental Information, May 2018 to April 2019 was the wettest year on record ever in the contiguous United States.
And Tyler Urban, who sells crop insurance and farms corn and soybeans near Sioux Falls, South Dakota, said already-saturated ground got even more rain in May and into June. He said “I know 1993 was another wet year. I’ve asked the old-timers if this is worse, and they’re saying yes.”
Urban said, “This year, there are whole farms that haven’t been planted. Right now, our ground conditions are finally starting to dry out, but it’s too late. In my insurance book, 100 percent of my farmers will have some sort of … claim.”
Jonathan Kleinjan, a crops specialist at South Dakota State University, describes the current situation as unprecedented. He says that only 30 to 40 percent of corn has been planted, with standing water hurting the likelihood of a decent outcome for acreage planted.
And then he said that farmers’ decisions to not plant crops will have ramifications for many of the businesses that furnish farmers with equipment and supplies putting them at risk.
Eric Richer, an Ohio State University extension educator, said “The level of financial, emotional and mental stress on farmers is significant as a result of late planting in 2019. The spring of 2019 is like no other I’ve seen in my career,” he said. “The new normal for farmers is weather extremes, and that’s difficult to manage.”
Also, Sam Custer an extension educator for Agriculture and Natural Resources in Ohio, said that corn and soy already planted this year were planted under poor conditions and that most people anticipate a poor yield.
He said, “As I talked with agricultural lenders, they were becoming very concerned there will be some people this fall who will be very financially strapped; they’re worried about mental health issues.”
U.S. farmers are in big trouble as they are throwing in the towel giving up on America’s crops as they feel like they have reached the point of no return.
And this is a sign, how events and conditions in the world are linked prophetically to the Scriptures in bringing about the Last Days environment of prophecy.
Where the Biblical prophecies (Matthew 24, Luke 21, Revelation 6, Revelation 16) foretell that extreme weather and famine will be signs of the Last Days indicating the coming end of the age.
It’s time to prepare for the nearing appearance of Jesus Christ by being born again spiritually into the Kingdom of God as Jesus said we must (John 3) and His Apostles described how (Matthew 16:19, Acts 2). Which brings peace and joy in the Holy Spirit in this life and eternal life in the world to come.
