Breaking news out of the Middle East, where U.S. President Trump has ordered the killing of the powerful leader of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards Corps, Qassim Suleimani. Who was killed in a drone strike at Iraq’s Baghdad Airport.

U.S. military forces have just killed two top Iranian military commanders in Iraq with a drone airstrike in what could become to have a greater Mid-East impact than the killing of al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.

Qassem Soleimani, the powerful head of Iran’s Quds Force, and Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, the commander of Iran-backed Iraqi militias known as the Popular Mobilization Forces, were both killed in a drone strike near the Baghdad International Airport early Friday, American officials said.

General Suleimani’s death was also confirmed by official Iranian media.

The reason given for the strike by the Pentagon in a statement said that “General Suleimani was actively developing plans to attack American diplomats and service members in Iraq and throughout the region.”

The statement went on to say “General Suleimani and his Quds Force were responsible for the deaths of hundreds of American and coalition service members and the wounding of thousands more. This strike was aimed at deterring future Iranian attack plans.”

The statement added, “The United States will continue to take all necessary action to protect our people and our interests wherever they are around the world.”

The killing of Suleimani will be a major blow for Iran and its activities throughout the Middle East. Since Suleimani as the head of Iranian Islamic Gaurd and Quds Force was responsible for directing all Iranian military, militia, and terrorist activites outside of the borders of Iran.

It is also a major escalation of President Trump’s “maximum pressure” campaign against Iran, which began with economic sanctions but has steadily been drawn more and more into military action.

The strike almost immediately followed a warning on Thursday from U.S. Secretary of Defense Mark Esper, who said the United States military would pre-emptively strike Iranian-backed forces in Iraq and Syria if there were signs that Iranian militias were planning more attacks against American bases and personnel in the Middle East.

Esper said, “The game has changed.”

And said that “If we get word of attacks, we will take pre-emptive action as well to protect American forces, protect American lives.”

Esper made the statements after a string of events in Iraq: where Iranian militia in Iraq had attacked a U.S. base with 30 rockets wounding U.S. forces and killing an American civilian contractor; then the U.S. carried out counter-strikes against the militia in Syria and Iraq; which was followed up by Iranian militia attacking the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad.

The American drone strike hit two cars carrying Mr. Suleimani and several officials with Iranian-backed militias as they were leaving the Baghdad airport.

American officials said that multiple missiles hit the convoy in a strike carried out by the Joint Special Operations Command.

American officials consider Suleimani, as the commander of the Revolutionary Guards’ elite Quds Force, responsible for the deaths of hundreds of American soldiers during the Iraq War and hostile Iranian activities throughout the Middle East.

This is a major event that will take the Mid-East tensions between the U.S. and Iran to a whole new level not seen before and opens up new possibilities of open war between the U.S. and Iran in the Mid-East.
