US forces in Europe are now on higher alert as Russia is moving large amounts of war equipment and troops to the border with Ukraine in a buildup that could possibly be a lead-up to an invasion.
And Russia has also warned NATO against sending any troops to help Ukraine, amid reports of the large Russian military build-up on its borders.
Citing “escalations of Russian aggression” in the area, the US forces in Europe are now on higher alert according to the reports.
A NATO official told Reuters news agency that Russia was undermining efforts to reduce tensions in eastern Ukraine and that NATO ambassadors had met to discuss the situation. The official said, “Allies share their concerns about Russia’s recent large-scale military activities in and around Ukraine.”
In a phone call with Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky, Joe Biden “affirmed the United States’ unwavering support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity in the face of Russia’s ongoing aggression in the Donbas and Crimea,” the White House said in a statement.
Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba told the BBC that there had been a build-up of Russian military at the northern border between Ukraine and Russia, along the eastern border, and “also in the illegally occupied Crimea.”
“So from three directions we observed a military build-up of the Russian federation,” he said.
Ukraine’s army commander General Ruslan Khomchak says Russia has deployed 28 battalion tactical groups near Ukraine’s eastern border and in Crimea, which would amount to 20,000-25,000 troops.
And according to General Khomchak, Russia also has nearly 3,000 officers and military instructors in eastern Ukraine as well. Also, an airborne assault brigade – about 4,000 troops – is being redeployed to Crimea.
Analysts are saying it feels like Putin is trying to test and probe the West’s defenses and resolve to confront him, maybe as a prelude to a new military offensive in Ukraine.
As they say Putin may be readying for a big step. Where a fight in Ukraine would be a diversion from his own problems at home and a victory would throw fuel on the fire of Russian nationalism.
Additionally, they also say there are water shortages that have been experienced in Crimea. The roots of which were laid seven years ago when Ukraine shut off the North Crimean Canal, cutting off the majority of the region’s fresh water supply.
So there is the possibility Russia is trying diversionary tactics near Donbass when the bigger prize would be a military thrust into Ukraine to capture water courses which supply Crimea with water.
And Putin may think that the West is weak and divided where it will not respond fearing what Russia might do since Biden is in the White House.
It was during the Obama administration when Biden was vice-president, that Russia invaded Crimea successfully and Russia’s expeditionary military force also moved into Syria finding that Obama’s red-lines were meaningless. So Putin may see Biden in the White House as an opportunity for military expansion.
