News reports say that U.S. Pastor Andrew Brunson has been released from prison in Turkey. The U.S. pastor detained in Turkey for almost two years is to leave prison and move to house arrest until his next trial, a court has ruled.

Pastor Brunson, a U.S. citizen, was arrested in Turkey and imprisoned in October 2016 when falsely accused of aiding an organisation led by exiled Turkish preacher Fethullah Gulen – which Turkey’s government now regards as a terrorist group after the attempted coup in Turkey. Turkey’s government blames Mr. Gulen for the failed coup attempt against President Recep Tayyip Erdogan that year.

Pastor Brunson’s several trials in Turkey thus far were well attended by U.S. Government officials who roundly declared afterwards that it was obvious there was no credible evidence or witnesses presented, saying his imprisonment was illegal.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo welcomed the current decision, but said on Twitter that it was “not enough” and that there was “no credible evidence” against the pastor. Turkey’s case against Pastor Brunson has strained relations with its NATO allies and drawn fire from US President Donald Trump.
