During a contentious confirmation hearing, the U.S. senator from Vermont questioned the faith of the nominee for deputy director of the Office of Management and Budget.

Senator Sanders cited the religious beliefs of Russell Vought as disqualifying him as an individual for public office, during a confirmation hearing for Vought as President Trump’s nominee for deputy director of the Office of Management and Budget.

Sanders took issue with an article Vought had wrote where he said Muslims do not simply have a deficient theology but they do not know God because they have rejected Jesus Christ his Son, and they stand condemned.

Sanders said it was hate speech and Islamophobic. Vought replied he is a Christian believing in a Christian set of principles based on his faith. He also added that as a Christian he believes that all individuals are also made in the image of God and are worthy of dignity and respect, regardless of their religious beliefs.

Yet, Sanders pressed Vought on his Christian beliefs in respect to Islam until Sanders said that this nominee is really not someone who is what this country is supposed to be about and that for this he rejected the nominee.

Other senators present chastised Sanders saying they are not to question the faith of others and how they interpret their faith to themselves.
