Alaska has been warming from heat waves in recent years until now the warm waters are killing off the young cod causing the fishery to be closed for the first time.

In an unprecedented response to historically low numbers of Pacific cod, the federal cod fishery in the Gulf of Alaska is closing for the 2020 season.

It’s a decision that came as little surprise to Alaskans, but it’s the first time the fishery has closed due to concerns of low stock.

Warming ocean temperatures in Alaska are wreaking havoc on a number of Alaska’s fisheries, worrying biologists, locals and fishermen with low returns that jeopardize fishing livelihoods.

The cod were doing well until emergence of the marine heatwave in Alaskan waters which caused ocean temperatures to rise and the fish started dying off.

Following the first heat wave, cod numbers crashed by more than half, from 113,830 metric tons in 2014 to 46,080 metric tons in 2017.

And the decline has been steady from there.

There are now more signs of warming events and scientists say it’s hard to predict what the future of the fishery will look like.

But a NOAA fisheries ecologist based in Kodiak said “We’re just well beyond what we’ve ever seen before. It’s this very unusual, warm event.”

With uncertainty looming, fishermen in Kodiak are struggling with decline of what used to be a major part of the winter economy with many fishermen moving on.

The Biblical Prophecies (Matthew 24, Revelation 16) foretell that there will be increasing heat upon the earth and also famine as signs the world is nearing the tribulation of earth at the end of this age.

These events and conditions happening now are signs pointing to the nearing fulfillment of the Last Days prophecies at the end of this age revealing it’s time to prepare for the nearing appearance of Jesus Christ for His Church by being born again spiritually into the Kingdom of God as Jesus said we must (John 3) and His Apostles who were authorized (Matthew 16:19) described how (Acts 2).

Preparing those Biblically born again into the Kingdom of God to be ready to escape all the things that will come to pass, in the wrath of the tribulation of Revelation prophecy, that comes upon the world of disobedience. As the born again Church is not appointed unto wrath (1 Thessalonians 1:10) but instead to salvation through the Lord Jesus Christ.
