Waterways Bursting Banks in Houston-Area Flood Forcing New Evacuations

Critical new evacuations are being ordered across the area of the Houston region over fears of the certain expectations that water levels in the bayous and rivers will reach new unseen record levels threatening to overtop local levees and dams inundating even more homes and businesses.

In a press conference, FEMA Administrator William “Brock” Long said more than 30,000 people will be placed into shelters and at least 450,000 will need disaster assistance in the wake of the catastrophe.

“This is a landmark event for Texas,” Long told reporters. “Texas has never seen an event like this.”

In downtown Houston the George R. Brown Convention Center was opened to receive refugees from the storm with Red Cross officials initially preparing for 1,200 evacuees, but immediately more than twice that amount showed up.

Dr. Greg Postel, hurricane specialist for The Weather Channel, said the flooding in the Houston area “could be the worst flooding disaster in U.S. history.”

Gov. Abbott, appearing on Fox News Sunday, said: “We’re measuring rain these days not in inches but in feet.”
