The World Health Organization (WHO) is warning that HIV is mutating to where it is resistant to drugs used to treat the virus due to it continuing to evolve.

The study reports that the world has crossed the line to unacceptable levels of resistance by the virus to drugs used to treat it, seriously impacting the ability to halt the AIDS pandemic.

37 million people are infected worldwide with HIV and of those only 19.5 million are receiving the treatment, but they are experiencing increasing drug resistance by the virus.

Resistance by the virus to current drug treatment has surpassed the 10% line for patients getting treatment in Cuba, South Africa, Nicaragua, Papua New Guinea, Uganda, Namibia, Guatemala, Argentina, Zimbabwe, Eswatini and Nepal, said the WHO.

But in Honduras, around 25% of HIV patients getting treatment have a strain which is resistant to the drugs.

And the problem is particularly acute in parts of sub-Saharan Africa where up to 30% of the populations getting treatment have HIV – the virus which can lead to AIDS. Among children in nine sub-Saharan countries, half of the HIV-positive infants were drug resistant.

The report says the increasing HIV drug resistance trends could lead to more infections and deaths in the pandemic.
